How Single Moms Can Overcome Poverty

Single moms often find themselves in situations where they feel powerless.  They are trying to raise their children on one income which is often low income.  For those in this situation, it is wise to devise a plan.  Of course, you have to decide that you want a better life for yourself and your child or children.  Once you make the decision to move ahead, you have to realize it is unrealistic to believe you can do it without enlisting some form of help.  This is where government assistance for single mothers can be valuable.  First of all, a single mom must determine what her household income is, and if it  is low enough to qualify for assistance.

The U.S. government gives funds to individual states, who in turn delegate a portion of the funds to it's counties.  So, it will be your county agencies that you will contact to see if you qualify for aid.  Some of these agencies go under the banner of Social Rehabilitation Services (SRS).  Through SRS, a single mother can get food stamps, WIC stamps (provided at least one child is under the age of four), subsidized housing, and free health care.  If your children are in public school, don't forget to check out the reduced or free lunch programs.  If you go to the main office of your child's school, they will provide you with an application.

If you are living in environment of abject poverty, you can also find help for improving your housing situation.  The SRS office can instruct you on how to apply for Section 8 housing or Low Income Housing.  If you don't care to move, but need lower rental rates, don't hesitate to approach your landlord about Section 8 housing.  He may be interested in having a guaranteed subsidy amount coming in every month.  You can also receive assistance with your heating and electricity bills.

Once you've received your assistance and your household is running smoothly, the next step is to find government assistance for single mothers in the form of student loans or grants to attend college to get the level of education that will provide a higher level of income so you no longer need assistance.  To get a better education will not only be valuable to your family's income, but will also provide a wonderful example for your children.  They will grow up saying "If Mom went to college, so can I."
