Housing Assistance For Single Mothers

Section 8 Housing For Single Moms One of the most pressing issues for single mothers is housing.  In emergency situations, there is for some the option of living with relatives.  In foreign countries it is very common for several generations to live in a single dwelling. In America, this is an option, but not considered a viable long-term solution.  Our culture embraces the idea that each family should have their own home.  Single parent families are here to stay and statistics say that the number of single parent families is on the rise.  The majority of these families have single mothers as the head of household.  Also, the majority of single moms and their children are living well below the poverty line.  It is no wonder then, that housing assistance for single mothers is also rising in number to meet the needs of these families in finding suitable housing. Thanks to the Internet, it is now easier for single moms to check out their options.  By typing in "housing assistance for single mothers" into a search engine online, a single mom can find those options.  One of those options is government housing assistance.  This type of help is popular for the obvious reason that the government has more funds available.  A popular program is the Section 8 program.  Both families and single people may qualify.  If a family qualifies for this kind of assistance, and the landlord's property passes a government inspection, then the state's HUD program will pay 30 to 40% of the applicant's rent in the form of a subsidized voucher.  Another form of housing assistance for single Mothers, comes from the same source as Section 8, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). This program is called Low Income Housing.  This assistance takes the form of an apartment building or a community of buildings that offer rental rates at a subsidized level.  Here again, the applicant must qualify.  Both the Low Income Housing and the Section 8 programs usually have waiting list.  If you go on line to HUD website, you can see if there is a waiting list.  Usually the length of the waiting list varies from county to county.
